Starbucks Roastery - Shanghai

When next in Shanghai…

So they opened this Starbucks Roastery earlier in 2018 here in Shanghai… everybody was saying how good it was and you must go... yeah right says I.. just another Starbucks but bigger I thought. But wandering past post opening weeks showed the queues were huge and maybe 100-200+ some days. So a few weeks went by and I managed to walk past early one day and no queue! So in I went. How wrong my pre-conceptions were. Shanghai Starbucks coffee shops have been undergoing a smart refurbish with many becoming the new ‘Reserve’ branded stores offering hand made up market coffee options.

But this Roastery is something different again. A modern and attractive two floor interior with huge coffee roasters downstairs providing coffee bean delivery to the barista stations by way of a ceiling  mounted pipe network. You can hear the beans rattling away through these pipes as they are being sent through to the grinder hoppers. There are lots of staff with tablet in hand ready to take your coffee or food order - and lovely food there is. I am the first to criticise food quality but this place really has a high quality consistent product starting with an Italian bakery doing bread based items, lovely cakes and sweet choices. The cake display at one end of the big barista station has an inviting selection of cakes and lovely sliced ham off the bone filled croissants and focaccia at the other.

There is a handmade chocolate kiosk near one entrance, plus upstairs is the Teavana tea station and more quality food and seating. I suppose the whole two floors will comfortable hold in the vicinity of about 300-500 with lots of seating, but at a premium always being a busy store.

There are only two Starbucks Roastery's with the other smaller one being in the States but I suspect we'll see more of this format in China. When next in Shanghai, please drop by and see for yourself..
